The Deleon Bearcats nabbed the lead late in the game in a 4-2 victory over Cross Plains on Friday. The game was tied at two with the Bearcats batting in the top of the eighth when Colton Smith singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Cross Plains tied things up at two. Hunter Johnson singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
Lane Powledge pitched Deleon to victory. He lasted seven and a third innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out 13. Austin Stogsdill threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. Stogsdill recorded the last two outs to earn the save for Deleon.
Trent Tollett took the loss for Cross Plains. He allowed three hits and two runs over seven and a third innings, striking out ten.
Colton Smith went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bearcats in hits. The Bearcats were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error.
Cross Plains tallied eight hits on the day. Johnson and Caleb Hernandez all managed multiple hits for Cross Plains.
The win advances Deleon to a 9-1 district record.
